TAPPENING (TAP)
Under the direction of Heidi Schultz, Tappening is a DC-based rhythm tap company that has been performing around the metro area since 2000 in venues from Dance Place to the Kennedy Center. Tappening presented their first evening-length concert, "Beautiful Noise," in June 2003 to sold-out audiences at the Jack Guidone Theater. Ms. Schultz was a 2004 Metro DC Dance Awards nominee for her performance in that show. On
February 25-26, 2006, Tappening will present its second evening-length concert at Dance Place in Washington, DC. Rhythm tap is a broad category that encompasses the hoofing styles of modern stars such as Savion Glover and Gregory Hines and past masters such as Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and Jimmy Slyde. It focuses on rhythms and intricate footwork, creating a percussion instrument out of the dancer's feet. Tappers don't simply mimicthe melody and beat of a piece of music, rather they enter into a dialogue with the music-becoming another voice-and accentuate and comment on the conversation at hand. What sets Tappening's choreography apart is the use of the upper body as well as the feet, especially by incorporating club dance-type moves and dancing to a wide variety music styles such as electronica, hip-hop, funk, acid jazz, brass band, and reggae. |
MERIDIAN DANCE (Belly Dancing)
Thank you for coming. We would like to thank all of the dancers and drummers for today's show. We would also like to thank our friends at BMC for puttingtogether this great venue. Many experts say belly dancing is the oldest form of dance, having roots in all ancient cultures from theorient to India to the Middle East. In America, belly dancing enjoyed its first significant renown when the famous dancer Little Egypt performed at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. The dance often focuses upon isolating different parts of the body, moving them independently in sensuous patterns, weaving together the entire feminine form. Show the dancers your support! We encourage you to clap, zagahreet, and sing along if you know the words. In bellydance, it is appropriate to tip dancers and musicians, especially if you really enjoy their performance. Dancers & drummers spend a small fortune on costumes and instruments and appreciate your support. Meridian dance company provides a variety professional and semi-professional belly dancers for regular and special events. Our dancers are energetic, charismatic, and provide an affordable performance which is entertaining and suitable for the whole family. We hope you had a fabulous time and that you will call upon us when you need belly dancers for your events. We invite you to join us for our next hafleh on October 23rd at 5 PM. For information, directions and details about upcoming events visit us at www.meridiandance.com. |
